Berens Park is situated at 493 N. Oaklawn Ave, Elmhurst, IL 60126, and its current size is 65.20 acres.
In 2004, Berens Park was converted into a new “world-class” park to the delight of many. In addition to two synthetic turf fields and running trails which are open for public use, it also features an impressive sledding hill as well as two playgrounds – one in the southwest corner and another at The Hub!
The Hub is the perfect place to take your children. It features a miniature golf course, batting cages for softball and baseball, an 18-hole water play area or “spray ground,” as well as memorial pavers available in our 3,500 sq ft pavilion that can be reserved by anyone who wishes to use it. Berens Parks features amenities such as lighted ball diamonds, volleyball courts, a basketball court, and more. You can also find concessions stands for snacks or food; running trails to improve your cardio health; sand volleyball courts where players compete in the game with their hands by touching it over the net before returning it back to the other side of the field without hitting the ground.
Berens Parks is home to two different playgrounds, the Hub and Southwest Corner. The Hub has a mulch surface with five slides (two for toddlers), soft surfaces galore, play structures like rock climbers, and swings in all shapes sizes. If you’re looking for sandboxes or sensory equipment, visit the southwest corner, which features climbing poles.
Elmhurst’s Berens Park was originally known as Armitage Avenue Park, but it has since been renamed after the Elmhurst Historical Commission founder and local author/historian Helmut Berens. Originally acquired in 1963-1965 through purchases from private property owners who were eager to make a donation for public use, more parcels of land have been purchased over time until 2002 when MacCormac College donated 25000 square feet of space on their campus to be used by recreation programs. Now called Wagner Community Center with 7 additional acres designated green spaces within its boundaries, this valuable piece of history is open for the enjoyment of all residents today!
The Elmhurst Park District Board of Park Commissioners approved a master plan in January 2002, which led to the construction and installation of The Hub at Berens Park. This central core includes facilities that will be used by all citizens who want access to recreation or events like concerts or festivals. After this first phase was completed, on 23rd September 2003, they named one pavilion-the main pavilion after Representative Lee A Daniels For his instrumental role in making sure the redevelopment project succeeded!
